LAKE RONKONKOMA - A public meeting was held at Sachem Central School District tonight after the budget was rejected last week.

Sachem's Board of Education says the rejection will force it to make several deep cuts. The members are looking into closing two of the four middle schools, slashing clerical and administrative personnel and cutting 50 percent of school clubs. The board is also toying with the idea of cutting full-day kindergarten to half-day.

The district was one of the six budgets rejected last week on Long Island. School officials had wanted taxpayers to approve a budget that pierced the state's tax levy cap.

The board will meet again on Wednesday and Thursday to finalize the budget proposal. Taxpayers will vote the new proposed budget on June 18.
