Public hearing on Nassau police reorganization leads to uproar

MINEOLA - A public committee hearing on the plan to reorganize the Nassau County Police Department turned into a war of words after the hearing was adjourned unexpectedly.

Lawmakers were questioning Police Commissioner Thomas Dale about the plan to turn four of the precincts into community policing centers to save about $20 million when members of County Executive Ed Mangano's (R-Nassau) administration were unable to answer any questions, instead asking lawmakers to e-mail their questions to them.

Shortly thereafter, County Legislator Dennis Dunne Sr. (R-15th District) unexpectedly adjourned the meeting until next week, a move that incited outrage for democratic legislators who were expecting the committee to vote that night.

"The commissioner was not advised that these types of questions were going to be asked today, so obviously he was not prepared," Presiding Officer Peter Schmitt (R-12th District) said regarding the sudden adjournment.
