SMITHTOWN - Two Suffolk County legislators are introducing a bill that would require non-union county employees to pay a portion of their health care costs. The proposal would cover about 441 county employees who would have to contribute anywhere from 15 to 25 percent of their health care costs based on their salary. The law would not affect the thousands of workers in the county who are unionized. There are ongoing talks between union leaders and county officials on possible concessions in an effort to attack Suffolk County's budget deficit.
