Proposal could bring drag strip to Calverton

CALVERTON - A new proposal could bring a drag strip to the East End.Long Island Motorsports CEO Marty Johnson says he wants to set up a drag strip on the unused portion of the 7,000-foot former Grumman runway in Calverton, which is occasionally used by the Suffolk County Police Department as a driver training course.Johnson says he was counting on the support of Riverhead Town Supervisor Sean Walter after he allegedly left Johnson a voicemail encouraging him to quietly slip the proposal to the Riverhead Town Board and pledging to speed it along. But after the voicemail became public, Walter said the plan must be studied first. The proposed track faces opposition from Long Island environmentalists and neighbors who don't want the noise.Johnson's drag race plan could be presented to the town board as early as August.
