WEST BABYLON - (AP) - A police prisoner on Long Island diedFriday after officers shot him twice with a Taser stun gun.

Suffolk County police say officers used the electrical weapon inan attempt to subdue 40-year-old Daniel McDonnell after he began"acting irrationally" Friday morning while being held in a policestation cell.

After the attack, police said McDonnell suffered "respiratorydistress" and was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Authorities said the incident is being investigated.

The Taser was initially conceived as an alternative to deadlyforce, but in practice it is often fired by police officers hopingto avoid a physical struggle, or get someone to comply with anorder.

McDonnell was arrested Thursday after a dispute with a neighborin Lindenhurst.
