WOODBURY - President Barack Obama held a news conference today to unveil several new housing initiatives that aim to help struggling homeowners across the country. Under his plan, homeowners with mortgages insured by the Federal Housing Administration (FHA) would be able to refinance at half the current refinancing fee. The Obama administration says that a typical borrower would be able to save more than $1,000 each year from the changes. The president also announced mortgage relief for veterans and active servicemembers. Some Long Islanders who are struggling to make their mortgage payments say they welcome any relief. Others who do not have government-backed loans say the plan will do nothing to help them.
