COPAIGUE - Small business owners across Long Island are reacting to President Barack Obama's minimum wage hike announcement Tuesday.

The president said that he will sign an executive order raising the minimum wage for federal contract workers to $10.10 from $7.25.   He also encouraged Congress to pass legislation that would enact a similar raise for all workers.

Business owners like Anthony Lombardo, who has run Albert's Pizza on Great Neck Road in Copiague for more than 50 years, says a salary hike would present yet another difficulty for small business owners on Long Island.

Lombardo says he wouldn't want to raise prices or lay off workers, but it would result in ownership having to foot the bill. He says Albert's Pizza is on solid footing and would survive, but he wonders about other small businesses.

Jon Hagelman, of Lindenhurst, says the president's words represent a step in the right direction.

"It won't solve everything, but it’s definitely a good start," he says.
