Power returns to thousands on hard-hit South Shore

LINDENHURST - Thousands of residents along the hard-hit South Shore saw something today they haven't seen in 13 days: Light. Power returned in large sections of Babylon Town as a new system to speed up power recovery kicked in. Through an agreement between LIPA and local government, town workers are informing substation personnel what neighborhoods didn't suffer serious damage so that employees can restore power. LIPA previously required that all homes get individual inspections before large areas could get power back. Workers distributed fliers in Lindenhurst today, cautioning homeowners to leave their circuit breakers off and to get their homes inspected if they have flood damage. Meanwhile, Nassau officials say they're not comfortable with doing what Babylon is doing to get the power back because conditions in the flood areas are still too dangerous. Islip Town says large parts of Oakdale are expected to be powered up, and inspections of homes in other areas of the town are now finished. Brookhaven Town did not return calls for comment.LIPA changes inspection rules for homes without flood damage
