LEVITTOWN - Many drivers are avoiding a major stretch of Hempstead Turnpike because they say potholes are ruining their cars.

The state Department of Transportation says it will begin accepting bids to completely resurface the stretch of road east of Wantagh Avenue later this year.

A spokesperson adds, "In addition, the New York state DOT maintenance forces have been out there, and will continue to address the potholes along NY-24 until the resurfacing project has been awarded."
