MANHASSET - Port Washington residents are protesting a plan to rezone town-owned property potentially destined for a diesel truck depot.

About 300 residents packed North Hempstead Town Hall on Thursday to rally against a plan to build the depot in the Harborview neighborhood. The 5-acre site, located on West Shore Road, is adjacent to more than 500 homes, condos and senior housing units.

Those in opposition say rezoning would allow the town to lease or sell the property to commercial company Dejana Industries. They add that fumes and fuel runoff would be hazardous to the environment and their health.

Town officials issued a statement saying the proposal is not expected to impact neighboring properties.

Another public meeting will be held at a time to be determined.
