PORT JEFFERSON STATION - A Port Jefferson Station woman is reuniting dogs rescued from Afghanistan with the veterans that cared for them overseas. Meredith Festa, who works with Guardians of Rescue, says the program is intended to help the troops once they return. "It's hard enough to serve in the military," says Festa. "But to then know that you're leaving your best friend there, I mean that's the same thing as leaving a member of their unit there." She says it cost $25,000 to have her current group sent overseas, but that four more dogs are arriving tomorrow. The dogs are neutered and vaccinated before being flown to the United States.
