LYNBROOK - A police officer from Long Island who survived Sept. 11 was honored at LaGuardia Airport Thursday afternoon as he retired.

Port Authority K-9 Lt. David Lim, of Lynbrook, was the first Asian K-9 officer in the Port Authority and had served for 34 years. Co-workers describe him as a hard worker who served as a mentor and role model to younger officers.

Lim was one of only 14 people inside the World Trade Center who survived the collapse in 2001. He was on the fourth floor with six firefighters, helping rescue an older woman in a stairwell when the building collapsed. Lim was pulled from the rubble 5 1/2 hours later.

Lim says he decided to stay on the force after Sept. 11 because he felt he had more to learn and more to give.
