HICKSVILLE - A new poll shows the race for Nassau County district attorney is closer than originally thought.

With the election three weeks away, a News 12/Newsday/Sienna College poll reveals that Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray is ahead with a six-point lead against acting District Attorney Madeline Singas.

Murray has about 48 percent of the vote, while Singas has about 42 percent. About 10 percent remain undecided.

The poll also shows that Murray is better known among Long Islanders. Murray has served as Hempstead town supervisor since 2003.

Singas says she's thrilled by the poll results. She says that given Murray's high name recognition, the supervisor should have a much bigger lead.

"The fact that I'm six points down at this stage with a month to go, I feel great. It's like a shot of adrenaline and it's exactly where we wanted to be," she says.
