WOODBURY - A growing majority of Long Islanders are getting behind the idea that public workers should pay more toward their health care and retirement packages to ease the burden on taxpayers, according to the latest News 12/Hofstra University poll.

Poll results show that 58 percent of respondents say public workers should be required to pay a portion of their health care and retirement benefits, while 18 percent believe that they shouldn't have to contribute to either.

Eleven percent say public workers should pay only toward health care, followed by 8 percent who think that the contributions should be limited to retirement benefits.

The issue has come to a head in Nassau, where County Executive Ed Mangano (R-Nassau) has proposed that public workers pay up to 25 percent toward their health care costs. Hofstra/News 12 Public Opinion Poll Long Islanders' Opinions on a Variety of Topics
