Police: Woman killed in West Babylon hit-and-run

Police are trying to track down the driver who struck a woman in West Babylon overnight and apparently left her in the street to die.

WEST BABYLON - Police are trying to track down the driver who struck a woman in West Babylon overnight and apparently left her in the street to die. Investigators say the body of 30-year-old Jennifer Wheeler, of Lindenhurst, was found on Sunrise Highway near Jerome Avenue at around 1:30 a.m. this morning. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Police say they have no witnesses, no car description, and no reason as to why Wheeler was on the busy stretch of road in the middle of the night. Detectives say a driver saw a woman leaning against the median, but by the time he stopped to see if she way OK, her body had fallen into the road. Nearby residents say drivers often zoom down the particular stretch of Sunrise Highway because there are no traffic lights. A fence was installed along Jerome Avenue to try to deter pedestrians from trying to cross there. Police are urging anyone with information on the case to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
