SMITHTOWN - Suffolk County police say a young Smithtown boy is safe after wandering into a busy road in the middle of the night.
Authorities say a passing motorist called police at around 1:30 a.m. after spotting the 2-year-old near the intersection of Townline and Terry roads.
Officers knocked on doors near the spot where the child was picked up, looking for his family since the 2-year-old didn't know where he lived.
Failing to find the parents, police turned to the county's Code Red phone system to call residents in a half-mile radius. One of the 1,200 homes contacted was the boy's.
County Executive Steve Levy (R-Suffolk) says the parents checked their son's room and realized that he somehow got out the front door.
Police say they're not pressing charges and will refer the case to Child Protective Services for an investigation.
