Police: Suspicious package at Jones Beach theater not a threat

JONES BEACH - Police investigated a suspicious package last night near the Nikon at Jones Beach Theater before declaring there was no threat to concertgoers.

Officials say that a State Parks police officer discovered the suspicious package at around 7:30 p.m.

Emergency crews along with the Nassau County Bomb Squad were called in to investigate. The bomb squad determined the package was not a threat.

Police say that the package was actually a cooler containing water bottles. They say that the cooler had protruding wires, which originally prompted the scare, but the wires turned out to be part of an iPod speaker.

Officials say that 14,000 people were at the theater watching Santana and the Allman Bothers perform.
