Police: Suspects in carjacking crash may have stolen more cars

MINEOLA - Detectives say three suspects in a carjacking that ended with a crash at a Nassau elementary school yesterday may have stolen more cars on Long Island. Prosecutors say 18-year-old Remick Menjivar pulled a gun on a Hicksville man yesterday and sped away in his 2006 Infiniti. A police pursuit ensued and ended with the stolen car crashing into Fayette Elementary School in North Merrick. No children were hurt. Two more suspects were later linked to the carjacking. Police say 20-year-old Edwin Flores is accused of driving Menjivar to steal the car in another stolen vehicle, a Toyota Corolla. Shameik Howard, 20, was arrested with Flores when the two were found in the stolen Corolla. The Toyota belonged to a Long Island man who was carjacked in Queens last Friday, investigators say. In that case, two suspects approached the victim and asked for directions before pulling a gun and stealing his car, cell phone and wallet.Detectives say suspects with the same modus operandi of asking for directions are wanted in three more recent carjackings, plus two attempts.Menjivar and Flores were ordered held without bail at their arraignment today. Howard was ordered held on $25,000 cash or $50,000 bond. All three pleaded not guilty.
