SHIRLEY - Suffolk police say a Shirley woman was hit by a car while mowing her lawn shortly before noon Sunday.

Police say 62-year-old Valerie Fahie was struck by a vehicle outside of her home just north of the intersection at Maple Avenue and Winston Drive.

Police say Fahie was transported to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital, where she is listed in critical condition.

The driver of the Kia that struck the woman has been identified as a 36-year-old South Carolina man. He was uninjured.

Neighbors in the area say a posted speed limit of 30 mph is often ignored by drivers. They say a four-way stop at the intersection would be more effective than the current two-way stop.

The Kia driver has not been charged. Police are asking anyone with information on the crash to call 631-852-8752.
