Police: Shirley man arrested in fatal DWI crash

BROOKHAVEN - Police have arrested a Shirley man who they say was driving while intoxicated when he slammed into a van in Brookhaven, killing the driver last night.

Authorities say Steven Tolar, 53, was driving a 2002 Lincoln Navigator east on Montauk Highway at around 10:20 p.m. when his vehicle crossed over the divider and struck a 2011 Chevrolet van traveling west.

The driver of the van, 43-year-old Scott Albrecht, of Patchogue, was pronounced dead at the scene. Relatives say the father of three was working late last night to earn extra cash for the holidays.

Tolar was taken to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center and held overnight for observation. He is expected to be released later tonight or tomorrow.

Tolar is facing a driving while intoxicated charge.
