Police probe double-stabbing, crash in Hempstead

HEMPSTEAD - Police say they are investigating a gang-related double-stabbing in Hempstead that resulted in a car crash last night.

According to detectives, two unidentified men were stabbed outside El Pacifico Bar on Franklin Avenue after a confrontation with several alleged members of the MS 13 gang. The victims fled in a friend's car to go the hospital, but en-route they were involved in a collision with a taxi cab at the intersection of Clinton and Fulton streets, according to officials.

Police say they eventually transported the stabbing victims to the hospital, where one of them was pronounced dead.

The driver of the taxi cab and a passenger were treated and released from the hospital. A pedestrian who was injured by debris at the site of the accident was also treated and released.

Officials say the two men were likely stabbed because their attackers mistook them for members of the 18th Street gang.

Police are investigating the crash separately from the stabbings. They say the driver who was rushing to the hospital might have been drunk behind the wheel, so charges against him may be pending.

Police are asking anyone with information regarding the crime to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS.
