WESTBURY - Police say they were forced to open fire on a car break-in suspect this afternoon in Westbury after he attempted to hit several officers with his van in an attempt to escape.

Officials say that they were searching for weeks for a van connected to a string of car break-ins in mall parking lots across the county.

Police caught up with the suspect in the Westbury Best Buy parking lot and attempted to stop him but the suspect tried to hit the officers with his van forcing them to open fire, according to authorities.

The suspect was hit once in the leg by an officer's bullet, police say.

The suspect has been placed under arrest but officials have not released the man's identity.
