WOODBURY - Police say a smooth-talking crook duped a Nassau Community College student out of $900 in a scholarship scam, and now investigators are trying to find out if there are other victims.Authorities say the suspect, 24-year-old Shawn Terrel Boone, approached an 18-year-old girl and convinced her he could secure her a $10,000 scholarship in exchange for her debit card and PIN number. He told the victim he needed the information to transfer the money, but instead, he withdrew $900 from her account.
Police say Boone contacted the victim again weeks later and told her he wanted more money. The victim closed her account and contacted police. The suspect was found with three other stolen debit cards when he was arrested. Some of the cards belonged to other college students in the Hempstead area. Police say Boone acted so professionally in carrying out the scam that they believe he may have had other victims.Officials say Boone has been previously arrested for robbery and sexual assault. He's being held on $25,000 bail on the new charges. Anyone who believes they may have been victimized by Boone is being urged to call Nassau Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS.
