FREEPORT - Police say they have arrested six men and a teen who attacked and robbed a young couple near Freeport High School last Saturday.

According to investigators, the six adult suspects, three from Freeport and three from Valley Stream, punched and kicked the man, fondled the woman and then stole their cell phones.

The teen is expected to be tried in family court for his alleged role in the incident.

Village residents are upset that the incident wasn't made public for days. Freeport Mayor Andrew Hardwick insists that no attempt was made to cover up the incident.

Hardwick says while the arrests were made by his village police department, the county police are handling the investigation, and he didn't want to comment on it until it was complete.

Based on descriptions given to police by the victims, arrests were eventually made at the corner of South Long Beach Avenue and Merrick Road.
