FLANDERS - A Flanders man is accused of seriously injuring his pregnant girlfriend, which forced doctors to deliver her baby prematurely.

Police say 38-year-old Mohammed Proctor struck his pregnant girlfriend in the head and stomach then tried to strangle her. The alleged beating happened Monday inside their Flanders home.

Authorities say Proctor told them Norris fell down the stairs. Police say the couple's 18-month-old son was at the home, but he wasn't hurt.

Proctor's mother, Dorothy White, tellsĀ News 12 that the newborn baby was allegedly found to have drugs in her system at the intensive care unit at Stony Brook Hospital. White also says both parents are banned by Child Protective Services from seeing or having contact with their children.

Proctor pleaded not guilty to first-degree assault and criminal obstruction of breathing. He's being held without bail.

Proctor was one of seven men who had their drug convictions overturned three years ago after a Southampton police officer involved in their arrests admitted he was addicted to prescription drugs. Proctor had been sentenced to two to four years in prison, but he was released after serving a few months.
