CENTRAL ISLIP - A Port Jefferson mother has been charged with endangering the welfare of a child after allegedly leaving her 6-year-old son home alone overnight.

Police say Melissa Weiner left her home on Windward Drive at around 8 p.m. Thursday night, and did not return until Friday afternoon.

Authorities say Weiner admitted to leaving the boy at home when she went to her boyfriend's house in Dix Hills at around 8:00 p.m. She says she accidentally fell asleep.

Police say Weiner's son wandered outside, stopped a village constable and told him he was by himself. Neighbor Al Demeo, who came over to help, says the boy was not frightened but seemed a little confused. He says the boy told him he never got dressed or went to school because nobody was home.

The child is now safe with family, according to police.

Weiner is due back in court next Tuesday.
