SEAFORD - A suspect armed with a machete is believed to be behind the holdups of two businesses Wednesday night, police say.

The masked suspect hit the Carvel on North West Drive in South Farmingdale at 9:43 p.m. A store employee told the suspect that there was no money in the register. Employees say the suspect then emptied a tip jar that had around $40 in it and fled the scene.

Police say the suspect was wearing a dark gray jacket, a black ski hat, white sneakers and a gray scarf.

Authorities say the same man may have been involved in another attempted robbery earlier in the evening. Police say a man armed with a machete entered the Dunkin' Donuts at 4004 Merrick Road in Seaford at 9:12 p.m.

The clerk at the shop also said there was no money in the register, and the man fled. After reviewing the surveillance footage, the Dunkin' Donuts store manager said the suspect looked very similar to the Carvel robber.

Nassau police say they are stepping up patrols in the area. No arrests have been made.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS.
