GARDEN CITY - Police say a suspect is in custody today after a violent carjacking at the Roosevelt Field Mall in Garden City last night. Investigators say a 23-year-old employee of Houston's Restaurant in the mall was picking up his paycheck at around 10 p.m. He left his car running with the door unlocked, and also left his 21-year-old friend waiting in the passenger's seat. That's when police say 31-year-old Damien Armella, of 62 Remsen St. in Lynbrook, hopped in the car and drove off with the friend still inside. Police say Armella asked the passenger if he was going to get out, and when he said no, Armella pulled out a kitchen knife and stabbed him in the head, face and hand. The victim was able to open the door and roll out of the moving car and the carjacker took off, police say. Authorities say Armella was tracked down and arrested today. The victim was hospitalized and treated for his stab wounds.
