Police: Man killed diving at shipwreck site near Freeport

Suffolk County police say a 65-year-old scuba diver was killed yesterday went he went diving at the shipwreck site of the SS Oregon, 33 miles

FREEPORT - Suffolk County police say a 65-year-old scuba diver was killed yesterday went he went diving at the shipwreck site of the SS Oregon, 33 miles off Freeport.

Authorities say Jeffrey Gershen, of Somers, N.Y., left aboard the Lockness Dive Boat to dive at the site of the shipwreck, but soon after floated to the surface and died a short time later.

The captain of the Lockness Dive Boat says Gershen may have suffered a heart attack, but that has not been confirmed by authorities.
