LINDENHURST - A parishioner is under arrest for allegedly stealing money from the donation boxes at his Lindenhurst church.
Leonard Degaetano, 43, was caught and arrested Friday after police led a stakeout at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Roman Catholic Church.
Monsignor Joe DeGrocco says he and other church officials were suspicious after they discovered donation boxes were mysteriously light. A security camera was set up and DeGrocco says they saw the suspect reach into the boxes with tweezers attached to a wire to take the money.
The crime happened multiple times and after viewing the security footage, DeGrocco called the police. Degaetano was wearing a mask when he was caught and when police removed it, DeGrocco recognized him as a parishioner.
