SETAUKET - A 21-year-old woman who chose to walk instead of riding in a vehicle with her intoxicated friend was killed when he ran into her, police say.

Police say the victim, Krystal Berkowitz, of Stony Brook, was struck and killed on Route 347 near Old Town Road at around 4 a.m. Saturday.

The driver has been identified as 23-year-old Lawrence Pagano, of Coram.

According to police, Pagano and the victim were together in his Jeep Liberty in a nearby parking lot. She apparently was worried about his intoxication and got out of the car to start walking home.

Police say Pagano located her and was pulling his vehicle to the side of the road in order to speak to her when he struck her with his car. Pagano called 911 and was attempting to help Berkowitz when officers arrived, police say.

Berkowitz was pronounced dead at the scene.

Pagano is charged with driving while intoxicated. His arraignment scheduled for Sunday was delayed. There was no word on when he will face a judge.
