LONG BEACH - An Island Park woman allegedly overdosed on heroin and slammed her vehicle into a storage unit in Long Beach Wednesday morning, all while her 8-year-old son was home alone, police say.

Long Beach police and paramedics arrived on National Boulevard near West Market Street around 9:45 a.m. and revived Kristie Steele, 31, with Narcan. They brought her to South Nassau Hospital for neck pain.

After her release from the hospital, police charged Steele with driving while ability impaired, possession of heroin and six counts of aggravated unlicensed operation of a vehicle.

Long Beach police say they then learned that Steele left her 8-year-old son home alone in Island Park. Nassau police went to the address and say he is now safe in the custody of his grandparents. That resulted in an additional charge of endangering the welfare of a child.
