WOODBURY - A Brentwood man is accused of attacking a sleeping man with a mallet and extorting money from his family.

Police say Joseph Ferraro, 27, broke into the victim’s trailer home in Bohemia and beat the man Friday night. They say he then called the victim's father and threatened to further harm his son if he did not receive cash.

The father dropped off the money and the victim was taken to the hospital with a head injury.

Prosecutors say Ferraro worked with the victim. Ferraro told prosecutors that the victim owed him money.

Ferraro was arraigned in Central Islip where he was charged with burglary and extortion. The judge issued three orders of protection for him to stay away from the victim, and the victim’s mother and father.

His bail was set at $150,000 cash.
