NORTHPORT - Northport police say a man is facing multiple drug charges after more than $14,000 worth of heroin and drug paraphernalia was seized from his car on Saturday.
Officials say they pulled over 26-year-old John Talavera around 2:30 p.m. on Scudder Avenue in Northport after he failed to stop at a stop sign. They say he was driving with a suspended driver's license.
Northport's chief of police says an officer then noticed a powdery substance at Talavera's feet. Upon further inspection, police say they found drug paraphernalia, as well as 730 decks of heroin packaged for sale, 36 grams of loose heroin in a bag, and nearly $2,500 in cash.
"When you have that much heroin in one car, obviously it's coming from some place. We have different leads that we are hopeful we can trace it to its source," says Northport Chief of Police Bill Ricca.
Police say Talavera faces several charges, including an A-1 felony, the most serious drug charge. They say his last known address was in Middle Island, but former neighbors say the family moved away more than a year ago.
