LAKE RONKONKOMA - A tight-knit neighborhood in Lake Ronkonkoma is reeling over the death of resident Gary Kroll, who was fatally struck by an alleged drunken driver over the weekend.

Investigators say 59-year-old Kroll was walking along Express Drive North when driver Thomas Vaughn, of Lake Ronkonkoma, struck him. Vaughn has been charged with driving while intoxicated.

A neighbor and friend of Kroll's says he had gotten into a minor car accident recently, so he often walked to get around. Residents in the area say that cars speed down the Long Island Expressway service road in the area.

Vaughn was arraigned yesterday, but prosecutors are investigating to determine if charges could be upgraded.
