BELLMORE - Nassau police say that a gunman was shot and killed in Bellmore tonight after shooting a 20-year-old firefighter in the back following a car crash.

Authorities say the driver crashed into a telephone pole at Bellmore and Claxton avenues and started shooting as firefighters arrived at the scene.

Firefighters say as they approached the car, there was the threat of serious physical injury and they were forced to shoot the driver. Officials say the firefighter was transported to Nassau University Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.
