Police: Elderly woman found dead in submerged car

PORT JEFFERSON - Suffolk homicide detectives are investigating the death of a woman who was found in a submerged car in Port Jefferson. Police officers responded to the Town of Brookhaven boat ramp on West Broadway and Barnum Avenue after a 911 caller reported seeing a vehicle in the water this morning. Police say that upon arrival, they discovered a Toyota Corolla in the water with a single occupant inside. Police identified the occupant as Anne Murray, 87, of Port Jefferson Station. Murray was removed from the vehicle and transported to St. Charles Hospital in Port Jefferson where she was pronounced dead. Neighbors described Murray as a very giving person. She had been a Three Village Meals on Wheels volunteer since 1986, and she loved to garden. Detectives are asking anyone with information on this incident to call the Homicide Squad at 631-854-6392.
