ELMONT - Police say two armed robbers were outsmarted by a clerk in Elmont early this morning.

According to police, the two suspects walked into a fried-chicken restaurant on Hempstead Turnpike shortly after midnight, pulled out a shotgun and ordered the clerk to open the register.

The clerk told them it was already open, then locked himself in the store's basement and called 911. After struggling with the register, the robbers realized it was a trick and ran out without cash, police say.
