UNIONDALE - Police say the driver accused of mowing down two brothers in Uniondale last night and then leaving the scene has turned himself in. Jose Sorto, 48, of East Meadow, surrendered to police this morning. Sorto, originally of El Salvador, was heading east on Jerusalem Avenue when he allegedly hit two brothers who were crossing at Leonard Avenue. Officials say the younger brother, age 36, died at the hospital. The second victim, who is 49 years old, is listed in stable condition with injuries to his head and back. Sorto's attorney told the judge at his client's arraignment today that the intersection is particularly dangerous. He says his client has a clean driving record and no prior arrests.
