Investigators say the unidentified driver stole a car from a 7-Eleven store in Northport while the owner was inside and went on a joyride, clipping vehicles on the parkway before slamming into a median. The suspect was spotted by a police officer who was sitting in traffic.

When the uniformed officer tried to approach the driver on foot, the man attempted to run him over, police say.

The officer, who suffered minor injuries, made it back to his car and called for backup. Meanwhile, just before the South Oyster Bay Road exit, police say the suspect crashed into a black SUV, totaling his car.

Troopers say they chased down the suspect and arrested him for driving while intoxicated and drug possession.

The officer who was injured in the crash has been treated and released from the hospital.

The eastbound Northern State Parkway has since been reopened.
