UNIONDALE - ? Police say officers responded to a 911 call of a burglary in progress on Planders Avenue this morning but upon arrival the officers received no response from the complainant.

Police say the officer knocked at the side door and witnessed a male subject walking through the kitchen carrying a rifle.

Cops say seconds later both officers heard a gunshot coming from the side of the house and requested assistance. Four more shots, each approximately three or four minutes apart, were heard coming from the side of the house.

Police have identified the subject as Peter Stefanowicz, 90, who barricaded himself inside his residence.

Stefanowicz walked to the side door and was apprehended by officers and was transported to Nassau University Medical Center for observation.
