Police: Centerport mom drove drunk with son in car

CENTERPORT - Police have arrested a Centerport woman who they say was driving drunk with her 5-year-old son in the car when she hit another vehicle and left the scene of an accident.

Officials say Jessica Lazarus, 39, was heading north on Centershore Road near the intersection of Route 25A yesterday afternoon when she went through a red light and crashed into a Toyota SUV.

Police say they arrested Lazarus at her home. Her son and the driver of the other vehicle were not injured.

Lazarus pleaded not guilty to a felony DWI charge under Leandra's Law. She was also charged with endangering the welfare of a child. Her attorney, William Wexler, says the public shouldn't be quick to judge a person with no criminal record.

Lazarus has been released on bail and her license has been suspended. She is due back in court Friday.
