SAYVILLE - A Sayville couple got a frightening awakening early this morning when a car barreled across their front lawn and struck their home, and the driver is now facing charges.

Police say 33-year-old Cory Schaetzle, of Bayport, lost control of his vehicle at around 3:15 a.m. on Broadway Avenue in Sayville. Schaetzle's car struck a utility pole before plowing onto the front lawn of the Romard residence, grazing their home and fence.

"I thought an airplane from MacArthur crashed," said homeowner Lisa Romard. "I had no idea what it was. All the lights were out, we lost electric and the street was dark."

Schaetzle's front bumper and side-view mirror were among the many car parts scattered on the couple's front lawn this morning.

Despite the damage, no one inside the home was injured.

Schaetzle was hospitalized with minor injuries. He's been charged with driving under the influence, although police say blood tests are being done to determine if he was under the influence of drugs or alcohol when the accident happened.

Schaetzle was scheduled to be arraigned on Sunday.
