Police: Brookhaven mom was drunk when she fled cops, crashed

YAPHANK - Police say a suspected drunken driver fled a traffic stop and then crashed last night, killing herself and critically wounding her young daughter. According to police, Melissa Maher, of Brookhaven, was stopped for driving erratically on Yaphank Avenue at around 8 p.m. Officers say they smelled alcohol on her breath. Police say the 36-year-old woman was ordered to stand behind her car but she drove off, went through a stop sign and was hit by a truck. Maher was killed and her 6-year-old daughter, Mia, is in critical condition with head injuries. The child was supposed to start first grade today.The couple in the truck was not hurt. A relative who spoke with News 12 Long Island accused police of recklessly pursuing Maher and caushing the crash.
