Police say they believe they shot and killed the second pit bull that was involved in the mauling of a woman last month. Police cornered

MERRICK - Police say they believe they shot and killed the second pit bull that was involved in the mauling of a woman last month. Police cornered the dog and shot it in the area of Jersualem Avenue in Merrick. They say several people reported the dog walking along the Southern State Parkway, and called 911. The two pit bulls attacked Shashi Bala Sharma, 62, on Sept. 29. One of the dogs was killed that day, while the other remained on the loose. Sharma had been hospitalized in critical condition, but has been downgraded to stable condition. Officials say she may be released from the hospital next week. The dog's owner say he is unsure why the dogs became violent, and that they were never involved in a dog fighting ring.
