CENTRAL ISLIP - Police have arrested a Bay Shore man today who they say slammed into a utility pole in Central Islip while driving drunk, killing one of his passengers.
Authorities say Jaime Grijava, 28, was driving his 1998 Mercedes southbound on Joshua's Path at around 3:30 a.m. when he apparently lost control of the vehicle and hit a utility pole at the intersection of Caleb's Path.
Grijava's backseat passenger, 22-year-old Teodoro Albin, was pronounced dead at the scene. Grijava's cousin Ramiro, who was sitting in the front, was taken to Stony Brook University Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.
Police say Grijava took off from the scene of the crash, leaving the car behind. He was arrested a short time later.
Grijava was charged with driving while intoxicated and leaving the scene of a personal injury accident. He will be arraigned tomorrow.
