FREEPORT - Police are stepping up patrols after an attempted child abduction in Freeport Tuesday.

Police say a man tried to kidnap a 12-year-old boy who was walking near the intersection of Terrace and North Brookside avenues around 5 p.m.

Detectives say the boy was walking home when a man came up from behind him and put his hands over the boy's mouth.

Authorities say while the boy struggled to get free, a passing driver honked his horn. The man then freed the boy and fled the scene.

"That is called a distraction technique," says Detective Lt. Richard LeBrun. "What  [the driver]  did was beep his horn and break the mental capacity of that perpetrator to the point where that child could get away."

The boy then called 911. He was not injured during the incident.

Police say they are looking for a stocky, black man in his 30s, last seen wearing a green jacket and jeans. Detectives are asking anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS.
