Police arrest 2 for allegedly drag racing on Smithtown road

SMITHTOWN - Police say they arrested two men for drag racing on a dangerous roadway in Smithtown early this morning.

According to authorities, 18-year-old Antonio Numa and 21-year-old Joshua McKasty were caught racing down Main Street at around 1 a.m. The two are being charged with having an unlawful speed contest, but fortunately no one was hurt.

The arrests happened near the same place where three pedestrians have been killed trying to cross the street over the past 18 months. Just last month, two sisters were also hit and injured.

Last week, town and county officials, along with state highway engineers, discussed ways to make Main Street safer. The state Department of Transportation is also reviewing a proposal to downsize the road into two lanes.
