NORTH BABYLON - Five people are dead, including two children and a teenager, after a fiery car crash on the Southern State Parkway.

The crash happened near exit 39 in the westbound lanes, within the town of Babylon. State police say the driver, 37-year-old Myriam Lebrun of Brooklyn, veered off the road and hit a tree just before 11 p.m. Saturday. The 1998 Honda vehicle burst into flames.

Witnesses say they rushed to try to help, but the flames kept them back.

Lebrun was killed, along with her three children and her mother. Police have identified the other victims as 68-year-old Moise Yolande, 14-year-old Marcus Jeanty, 9-year-old Marcel Jeanty and 8-year-old Kayla Jeanty.

Police say the group was headed back to Brooklyn following a family gathering on Long Island when the crash happened.

An assistant chief with the North Babylon Fire Department called it one of the worst accidents he has seen. He said the flames at the front of the car reached 10 to 15 feet in the air.

Police say it's unclear why the car left the highway. The cause remains under investigation.

Anyone who may have witnessed the crash is urged to call state police at 631-756-3300.
