NORTHAMPTON - A car crash on the East End left two young men dead and a female passenger in critical condition Tuesday night.
Police say Zachary Powell, 20, of East Moriches, was operating a car southbound on County Road 51 when he lost control of the vehicle. He then veered off the road into a wooded area.
Powell and his passenger, Christian Goody, 20, of Shelter Island, were pronounced dead at the scene.
Emergency officials worked for over an hour to extricate a third passenger, Ashley Picozzi, 19, of Saint James, from the car. Picozzi is listed in critical condition at Stony Brook University Hospital.
Lt. James Kiernan, of the Southampton Town police, says that it seems that speed was a factor in the crash. He says it doesn't appear that drugs or alcohol were involved.
Kiernan also said that a witness reported that Powell was traveling at a high rate of speed just before the crash.
Powell's mother says her son was driving Picozzi's 2004 Infiniti at the time but was not sure why. She says the two met online just three days ago.
Powell's mother called her son "a good kid" who was an Eagle Scout, an iron worker and an adrenaline junkie.
Police say the investigation into the crash is ongoing.
